Budget by paycheck, not by month

Monthly budgets assume the money arrives on the 1st. If you are paid every week or every two weeks, rent can be due three days before a paycheck lands, and a month that looked fine on paper still runs short. This calculator lines your bills up against your actual paydays instead.

How the numbers are worked out

Starting from the balance you enter, each day adds any paycheck and subtracts any bill due that day. Each paycheck covers the bills due before the next paycheck arrives; what is left from it is its leftover. Safe to spend is the lowest projected balance until the day before the payday after next, so money you spend now cannot leave a bill after your next paycheck uncovered.

These results are arithmetic on the numbers you enter, not financial advice. Lenders compound interest daily and may change minimum payments, so real statements will differ a little.

Questions

How do I budget when I get paid every two weeks?

Budget per paycheck, not per month. List each bill with its due date, then assign every bill to the paycheck that arrives before it is due. What is left from each paycheck after its bills is what you can spend until the next one. Twice a year a biweekly schedule has a third paycheck in one month, which has no monthly bills to cover yet.

What does "safe to spend" mean here?

It is the lowest your balance is projected to get before the payday after next. Spending up to that amount today still leaves every bill in that stretch covered. It counts your balance now, every paycheck and every bill you entered, and nothing else.

What if my payday falls on a weekend?

Most employers pay the Friday before. The calculator assumes that; in the saved plan you can switch it to the Monday after or to the exact date.

Is my information stored anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server. If you save the plan to a free account, it is kept in your browser too, not on our servers.
